No. 10 Women's Fencing Begins Ivy Championships Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - The tenth ranked women's fencing team makes its run at an Ivy title when it travels to Cornell to take part in the first round of the Ivy League Championships on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

The Quakers will fence four times on Sunday and then three more times next Sunday the 28th in a round robin tournament which will decide the Ivy League champion. Sunday the Red and Blue take on Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Cornell. Last year Penn finished 3-3 as four players were named All-Ivy. This year Penn is 10-4 overall, with three of its losses coming against top ten teams.

Epee has led the Red and Blue this season, going 13-1 with eight victories by 8-1 or 9-0 margins. Sophomore Stephanie Wheeler is 22-6 on the season, while juniors Diana Ark and Jenna Stahl, and freshman Amrit Bhinder each have 18 wins. Sabre is 11-3 on the year with Danielle Kamis sporting an impressive 34-5 overall record including 23-1 over her last eight matches. Sophomore Laura Paragano is 29-10 in foil this season as Penn has a 7-7 record in the weapon.

No. 9 Harvard is 9-5 but has dropped four straight to ranked opponents. The Crimson are 1-1 against defending national champion Penn State, while Penn is 0-1 against the Nittany Lions, having dropped a 20-7 decision a month ago. The Quakers fell to Harvard last year 15-12.

Second up for Penn is the fourth ranked Tigers. Princeton is 21-3 this year and has won its last 12 matches, including two wins over top ten teams (Temple, Ohio State). Last year Penn lost 15-12 to Princeton.

Last year the Red and Blue dispatched of Yale 21-6 and this year seek to do the same against the 10-3 Bulldogs. Yale's only losses this season have come against top five teams, Ohio State, Northwestern and Notre Dame. Penn's final opponent of the day is Cornell, a team which they defeated 16-11 a season ago. Cornell has won four of its last five matches, with the lone defeat coming to nationally ranked St. Johns.
