EARC Sprints Results

PHILADELPHIA – Penn’s No. 13 heavyweight rowing program is set to compete in the 2014 EARC Sprints Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. on Sunday. The Quakers will have five boats entered at Sprints, each looking to earn a qualifying spot in the IRA National Championships Regatta May 30-June 1 in Mercer, N.J.

The Quakers have won six Sprints championships, most recently in 1998. Over the past three seasons, the Quakers have improved their finish each year – with a 10th place finish last year the high-water mark in head coach Greg Myhr’s tenure.

Penn is the No. 10 seed this weekend in the Varsity Eight, and will row in its heat on Sunday against No. 3 seed Princeton, No. 4 Brown, No. 9 Columbia, No. 15 Holy Cross and No. 16 MIT. The Quakers will need to finish first or second to advance to the Grand Final. Penn has split with Columbia this year, finishing ahead of them in the Childs Cup and coming behind in the Blackwell Cup. Princeton won the Childs Cup against the Quakers, and the Red and Blue have not competed against Brown this spring.

The Second Varsity is the No. 7 seed, and will row against No. 1 Northeastern, No. 6 Navy, No. 12 Syracuse, No. 13 Dartmouth and No. 18 Rutgers in its heat on Sunday morning. Earlier this spring, the 2V was second to Northeastern by 0.9 seconds and are capable of knocking off one its higher-seeded competitors and reaching the Grand Final.

Penn’s Third Varsity is seeded No. 12 entering Sprints and will row with No. 1 Brown, No. 6 Cornell, No. 7 Yale and No. 13 Columbia in its heat. At the Blackwell Cup a month ago, Penn was second to Yale in the 3V, and finished 8.0 seconds ahead of Columbia.

The Quakers will be the No. 8 seed in the Frosh Eight, and will row with No. 1 Harvard, No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 5 George Washington on Sunday morning. The Second Frosh Eight is the third seed of three boats and will row with Wisconsin and Navy in the final.
