PHILADELPHIA – No. 21 Penn opened up its 2008-09 wrestling season with a pair of duals on Saturday in The Palestra, shutting out Princeton, 47-0, before dropping a close meet with No. 9 Michigan, 22-15.
The highlight of the meet with the Wolverines for Penn was Rick Rappo’s upset pin of No. 5 Kellen Russell at 141 pounds.
Rappo, trailing 5-2 in the second period, turned Russell’s aggressiveness against him, countering a shot from Russell into a quick takedown via a cement mixer. Rappo found himself on top of Russell and quickly pinned both shoulders on the mat for the win at 4:50. Rappo’s win via fall avenged a 5-0 loss to Russell at the 2008 NCAA Championships.
Penn needed the bonus points from the pinfall as the Red and Blue trailed, 6-0, at that stage of the dual. Penn’s No. 7-ranked 125-pounder Rollie Peterkin was defeated by Mike Watts, 10-4, and Bryan Ortenzio lost a tough 6-4 decision to Zac Stevens at 133 pounds.
Rappo’s win propelled Penn to a four-match winning streak in the middle portion of the dual that ended with Penn leading the contest, 15-6.
Cesar Grajales shut out Justin Chrzanowski at 149 pounds, 4-0, and that was followed by a Matt Dragon win at 157 pounds over Aaron Hynes, 11-5. Dragon, in his first match in over a year after returning from injury, scored a takedown 49 seconds into the bout and converted that into a nearfall with 13 seconds left in the first period for a 4-0 lead. After being taken down early in the second period, Dragon scored a reversal late in the period to extend his lead back to four entering the final period. Dragon added two escapes and a reversal in the third, which coupled with his 2:34 of riding time gave him the 11-5 decision.
Zack Shanaman added Penn’s fourth win of the day with a 6-3 decision over Justin Zeerip. Shanaman scored two takedowns and added an escape and a point on a technical foul on Zeerip.
Michigan got back on the board with a 20-7 major decision by No.1-ranked Steve Luke at 174 pounds over Andrew Coles and a 4-1 decision by Anthony Biondo over Colin Hitschler at 184 to close the gap in the match to 15-13.
A pin from No. 3 Tyrell Todd over Penn’s Dan Zander at 197 gave Michigan the lead for the second time in the dual. Todd scored the fall at 2:44 and gave the Wolverines a 19-15 lead.
Penn needed a major decision at heavyweight to tie the match and a tech fall or pin to win. Trey McLean was game in the early going of his match with Eddie Phillips, scoring the first takedown just under a minute in. Phillips rallied back with a pair of takedowns as well as two escapes for the 6-3 win that sealed the dual for Michigan.
Penn is now 1-1 on the season and Michigan is also 1-1.
Penn is back in action at the Cliff keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-6.
