Philadelphia - The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team opened the first of three meets at the Palestra this afternoon with a 23-18 loss to No. 7 Hofstra.
The No. 22 Quakers (1-2) found themselves down 20-12 entering the 197-pound bout. Knowing that Hofstra (6-1) was forfeiting the heavyweight match, senior Marcus Schontube found himself in a must win situation. Unfortunately Schontube could not pull out the victory falling to No. 2 Chris Skretkowicz, 6-0.
Junior Dustin Wiles picked up a huge decision for the Quakers with a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Paul Siemon at 174. Wiles got ahead of Siemon early and never relented the rest of the way.
At 133, senior Jeff Eveleth turned in a tough performance by pinning No. 17 Charles Griffin in 6:59. Down 5-4 with riding time in Hofstra’s favor in the closing seconds of the match, Eveleth took Griffin down and then pinned him with one second remaining for the win.
Sophomore Steven Swentzel also picked up a win, earning a 3-2 decision over John Manarte.
