Ithaca, N.Y. It was a battle of Ivy League rivals this afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center as the No. 14 Cornell stopped No. 24 Penn’s three-meet winning streak, 30-3.
Senior Matt Feast earned the Quakers’ (4-3, 1-1 Ivy League) lone points with a 11-5 decision over The Big Red’s (6-4, 2-0 Ivy League) Tyler Shovlin.
At 174, No. 9 Joe Mazzurco took down No. 19 Dustin Wiles with 26 seconds remaining in the match to come away with the 5-4 decision. Trailing 2-1 entering the second period, Wiles tied it up with an escape and then pulled ahead 4-2 with a takedown with two seconds left in the period. Mazzurco made the score 4-3 with an escape to start the third period setting up his winning takedown to close the period.
It was a defensive battle at 157, as sophomore Brock Wittmeyer fell to John Cholish, 3-2. After the first two periods went scoreless, Cholish broke the stalemate with a takedown with 1:21 remaining. With 28 seconds remaining Wittmeyer was able to reverse Cholish to tie the score, but with 2:24 of riding, Cholish walked away the winner.
At 141, No. 10 Doug McGraw battled Jordan Leen to two tie-breakers and two overtime periods, but was unable to hang on for the win, falling 6-4, for his first loss of the season. Leen took down McGraw down eight seconds into the second overtime period to escape with the win. Leen took an early 2-0 lead, but McGraw edged his was back earning two near fall points to tie the score. After a reversal by Leen, McGraw picked up a penalty point and an escape point in the closing minute of regulation to tie the score.
At 125 lbs. senior Mason Lenhard wrestled tough against Mike Mormile but was edged 3-2 in a very tight match. Lenhard escaped at the beginning of the second period to break the scoreless tie. Mormile earned a penalty point three seconds into the third frame to tile the score after a tumble out of bounds. Mormile pulled ahead 3-1 with a reversal at 1:17 but Lenhard countered with an escape to pull within one.
The Red and Blue are back on the mats on Friday, Feb. 4 with a special mid-day match-up against Harvard at noon and Franklin & Marshall at 2 p.m. at The Palestra. The Quakers continue their homestand on Feb. 5 as they host Brown at noon followed by the University of North Carolina at 2 p.m.No. 14 Cornell 30, Penn 3
