Philadelphia The 25th-ranked Penn grapplers wrapped up an afternoon on the mats with a 40-6 victory over EIWA foe Franklin & Marshall. The Quakers took five of seven matches wrestled on the mat and were benefited by three Diplomat forfeits.
Senior Matt Feast (22-3, 6-1 dual), ranked sixth in the nation, started things off for the Quakers (6-2, 2-1 Ivy League) at heavyweight with an 8-4 decision over Shawn Coughlin. With the victory, Feast ties two-time All-American Rick Springman for fourth all-time with 109 career victories.
The Quakers closed the day with back-to-back falls at 165 and 174. Senior Rich Ferguson made quick work of Steve Gregory, pinning him in 1:05, while rookie Jack Kitchen pinned Chris Richey in 2:12.
Senior Shawn Protz, wrestling in his first event in more than a month, rallied from a 2-1 deficit to overtake Aviel Ayoung with an 18-7 major decision at 141.
At 149, sophomore Steve Swentzel was able to outwork the Diplomats’Andrew Smith to post the 6-3 decision.
The Quakers return to action tomorrow as they host Brown and North Carolina at noon and 2 p.m., respectively, at The Palestra.
