BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 8 Lehigh defeated No. 25 Penn, 24-12, in the Quakers’ final regular season dual on Sunday.
Penn took an early 5-0 lead thanks to a 17-0 tech fall from No. 11 Rollie Peterkin over John McDonald at 125 pounds. Peterkin was the aggressor early in the bout, taking McDonald down quickly and then adding two back points. Three more nearfall points at the buzzer gave Peterkin a 7-0 lead entering the second period. With 1:05 to go in the second period, Peterkin scores a reversal to up his lead to 9-0. McDonald chose to start the third period on top, and Peterkin made him pay with another reversal 25 seconds into the period. Peterkin then turned McDonald twice for three-point nearfalls to end the match.
No. 18 Matt Dragon added bonus point for Penn at 157 with a major decision over Sean Bilodeau, 11-2. Dragon needed just eight seconds to score on Bilodeau, shooting for a quick takedown. He added a second takedown with less than a minute to go in the period for a 4-1 lead after the first. The only point of the second period was an escape from Dragon. In the third, Dragon took Bilodeau down 10 seconds in for two more points. Dragon then broke Bilodeau down, locking a wrist under his body and executing a textbook tilt for two backpoints. Bilodeau was able to escape, but then gave up a penalty point for hands to the head for the final score of 11-2 in favor of Dragon.
Scott Giffin came through with Penn’s third win of the day with a 7-5 decision over No. 17 Alex Caruso at 174 pounds. Giffin held a 2-0 lead after the first period thanks to a takedown with 26 seconds to go. In the second period, Caruso was twice called for stalling, awarding another point to Giffin. Caruso chose to start the third period on bottom and scored two points with a reversal 30 seconds into the final period. Action was then fast and furious late in the bout as Gifin escaped with 1:06 to go and then scored two points with a takedown. Caruso got those two back quickly with a reversal, but Giffin scored one by returning to neutral. Caruso had riding time, but it wasn't enough and Giffin prevailed for the third match in a row against Caruso.
