PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team made quick work of William & Mary Saturday afternoon in the Hecht Tennis Center, defeating the Tribe 5-2. Winning the doubles point and four straight singles matches paved the way for the Quakers, who are now 5-0 to start the season.
Sophomore duo Marshall Sharp and Thomas Spratt set the tone for the afternoon, winning the first doubles match at No. 2, 7-6. Senior captain Jeremy Court and freshman Nicolas Podesta sealed the deal with a win at No. 1, while junior captain Vim De Alwis and sophomore Matt Nardella completed the sweep with a win at No. 3.
Court, Podesta, De Alwis, and Nardella each added straight set wins at their respective singles flights for a quick 5-0 victory over William & Mary.
The Red and Blue’s second point of the match was provided by Court at No. 3. He easily defeated Damon Niquet by a score of 6-1 in the first set and then bageled him in the second. At No. 2, De Alwis remained resilient in a tough battle with Will Juggins and won each set 6-4 for point number three. Podesta then locked down the win for Penn at No. 1 in the battle of freshmen with the Tribe’s Christian Cargill. Set one was a tight contest, ending 7-5 in the Quaker freshman’s favor. Making sure the second was as close, Podesta took the point with a second-set win, 6-2.
Nardella started off strong at No. 4 against Lars de Boer and took set one 6-3. Set two was a tighter contest, but the sophomore gave the Red and Blue its fifth point of the match with a 7-6 set-two win.
