No. 52 Women's Tennis Hosts Old Dominion

PHILADELPHIA – Penn women’s tennis welcomes the Lady Monarchs from Old Dominion to the Levy Tennis Pavilion on Wednesday. The match starts at 3 p.m. The Quakers are coming off of their first win of the 2008 season, a 6-1 win over Temple on February 2. The Lady Monarchs are already deep into their season, boasting a 5-0 record and winning all but one match via shutout. The only team to take a point from ODU this season was George Washington, winning a singles match in the Lady Monarch’s last contest.

Both teams are transitioning new players into their lineups. Alexa Ely, one of two freshmen on Penn’s squad, won her first collegiate match with a win at number-six singles against the Owls. Starting for Old Dominion are three International freshmen - Marija Citic from Serbia, Joanna Dobrowolska of Poland and Nadine Fahoum of Israel. All three are going into Wednesday’s match undefeated.

ODU’s #1 singles player, Charlene Haarhoff, was a second team All-CAA selection last year in both singles and doubles, ranking as high as No. 93 in singles in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Most recently the doubles team of Yulia Rivelis and Maria Anisimova beat Cohen and Costa from Old Dominion, 9-8 (6) in flight B of the fall William and Mary tournament.

Penn has beaten Old Dominion in each of their prior encounters, including a 5-2 victory the 2007 season.
