UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The sxth rankedQuakers were unable to repeat last year's performance, as they lost to top ranked Penn State, however the Red and Blue did win its other two matches Saturday at the Penn State Duals.
Penn faced Johns Hopkins first on the day, taking care of the Blue Jays by a 22-5 score. In the match, epee won by a 7-2 score, while sabre took it 7-2 and foil won 8-1.
In the Quakers second match they faced off against the defending national champion Nittany Lions. Epee once again came away victorious, though they were the only weapon to do so as Penn lost 16-11. Epee won 5-4, as sabre lost a close 5-4 decision and foil fell 7-2.
The Red and Blue concluded its afternoon with an 18-9 victory over Haverford. Epee maintained its perfect mark on the day with a 5-4 win. Sabre rebounded, winning seven of nine bouts and foil came back with a 6-3 victory.
Junior Jacob Wischnia went 8-1 in epee with a perfect 3-0 mark against Penn State, while fellow epee fencer and freshman Steven Jow went 6-1.
Freshman Evan Prochniak, was a perfect 3-0 in sabre against the Nittany Lions and finished with a 8-1 mark, while sophomore Zane Grodman went 2-1 in foil versus Penn State and 3-2 overall.
The Quakers improve to 7-1 on the season, andreturn to action next week when they take part in the New England Invitational, held at Brandeis University on Saturday.
