PHILADELPHIA The Penn men’s squash team swept Navy, 9-0, on Thursday evening at Ringe Courts. This match was the first shutout of the 2008-09 season for the No. 6 Quakers and seven of the matches were determined in three quick games. The Red and Blue are now 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the Ivy League.
Playing in the No. 1 position of the ladder, Mark Froot kept the contest interesting when his match went five games and was the last to finish. Ultimately, Froot defeated Nils Mattsson, brother of Penn’s Thomas Mattsson, when he dug himself out of a 2-0 deficit and won the last three games to preserve the shutout.
The Quakers are headed to New England this weekend for two crucial Ivy League matchups. On Saturday the Red and Blue will be in New Haven, Conn. to play against No. 3 Yale the first regular season match for the Bulldogs. On Sunday, Penn will be in Providence, R.I to play Brown. The No. 14 Bears are coming off a 9-0 loss to Harvard in their first match of the year.
