No. 7 Men's Fencing Perfect at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADEPHIA - The seventh-ranked Quakers got a total team effort to go a perfect 6-0 at the Philadelphia Invitational on Saturday at Hutchinson Gymnasium.

Freshman Clifford Fishler was dominant on Saturday, finishing with an 11-2 mark in epee. Classmates Elliot Tusk and Josh Hammond were also impressive finishing 7-3 and 11-0 respectively in sabre. Sophomore Evan Prochniak lost just once on the day, going 9-1 overall while junior Vidur Kapur went 8-2.

In Penn's first match of the day, the Red and Blue used a 9-0 performance from sabre to take down Sacred Heart 18-9. Freshmen Michael Mills and Tusk both finished 3-0 while Prochniak was 2-0. In foil the Quakers won 5-4 behind two victories from Kapur. The Pioneers managed to capture a 5-4 victory in epee as Fishler went 2-1 for the home team.

The second match of the day would be the most challenging for the Red and Blue. Against ninth-ranked Duke the Quakers won each weapon by a tight 5-4 margin. Mills and Prochniak both went 2-1 in sabre while Kapur and senior Zane Grodman matched them in foil. In epee, Fishler was a perfect 3-0 and senior Jacob Wischnia earned a pair of wins.

The Red and Blue had little trouble against NJIT, defeating the Highlanders 21-6. Foil and epee won by matching 8-1 margins and sabre was also a winner, 5-4. Freshmen William Zhang and Royce Shipp both went 3-0 in foil and classmate Josh Hammond matched them with a perfect mark in sabre. In epee, five different fencers won a bout, with Fishler, Steven Jow and Zachary Propert all going 2-0.

In the Quakers' fourth match of the day they took on North Carolina. Against the Tar Heels, Penn had little trouble, winning epee 7-2 and taking sabre and foil by 6-3 scores. Fishler led epee once again with a perfect 3-0 record while Wischnia and freshman Joseph Isaac went 2-1. In sabre, Prochniak was 3-0 and in foil Kapur, Grodman and Shipp all went 2-1.

Facing Haverford in the fifth match of the day, the Red and Blue made quick work in sabre, winning 8-1. Penn also captured epee and foil by matching 5-4 scores. Hammond was perfect once again in sabre, as was Tusk and Prochniak. In epee Wischnia was 2-1 and in foil Shipp won two bouts and lost one.

The Quakers finished the day with an 18-9 victory over Drew. Hammond ended his day perfect with three more victories while Alex Guo added two for a 7-2 victory in sabre. Penn also won foil 5-4 and epee 6-3 as Shipp went 2-1 and Jow went 2-0.

The Red and Blue return to the strips next weekend to fence at the Penn State Invitational, pitting them against the defending national champion Nittany Lions and other strong programs.
