CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -The ninth-ranked Penn men's lacrosse team went on the road for the first time this season, and the Quakers chose a tough venue for their first road game -- Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. That is the home field of the University of North Carolina, and the Tar Heels have never lost there under third-year head coach Joe Breschi.
The Tar Heels' win streak reached 17 under Coach Breschi, as they jumped out to a quick start and never looked back Tuesday night. The final score was 12-6.
Thomas Wood and Nicky Galasso scored unassisted goals in the first two minutes of the game, and while John Conneely got one of those contests back almost two minutes later it hardly slowed the Heels down. They scored four more times in the first quarter, as Wood poured in two more while Marcus Holman and Billy Bitter.
Penn got one of the goals back early in the second quarter when Will Koshansky finished a Corey Winkoff feed, but Duncan Hutchins matched it just a minute later. Al Kohart netted what would be the first of three for him on the night, but again UNC answered, this time Ed Prevost with an unassisted goal.
The third quarter saw just three goals scored, as Kohart sandwiched a pair around Jimmy Dunster's unassisted effort.
UNC salted the game away with the first three goals in the fourth quarter. Penn's final goal came with just two seconds left, as senior captain Terry Kennedy finished a feed from Rob Fitzpatrick for his first goal since the 2009 season.
Penn goalie Brian Feeney made 10 saves Tuesday night as Penn was outshot by UNC, 33-21.
Penn returns to the Philadelphia area this weekend, playing at Villanova Saturday afternoon.
