PHILADELPHIA - Racing in numerous heavyweight events, the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team found several levels of success, capped by the victory by the 1st Freshman boat in the Novice 8 on Saturday afternoon at the Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The 1st Freshman boat started the morning with a victory in its heat of the Men's Novice 8 with a time of 6.11.62. It was the best time for any boat in any heat of the event. That success carried over into the afternoon final when the boat of Heenal Patel (C), Hurst Nuckols, Andrew McGrath, Mike Fisher, Adam Funk, Jamie Napoli, Oliver Hurd, Mylo Cheng and Ollin Venegas claimed the win in the event by besting their preliminary time with a finals finish of 6:10.17.
In the Men's Novice 4 race, the Quakers finished first in their heat and qualified for the finals with a time of 7:31.76. In the final, they improved upon their time at 7:31.06 to place fifth in the event.
The 1st and 2nd Varsity boats each reached the finals of their events.
The 2nd Varsity won their respective heat in the Men's JV 8, crossing the finish line at 6:11.69. In the final, the boat of Lin He (C), Andrew Voss, Jordan Martin, Adam Neinstein, Brad Adams, Paul Rivenburgh, Steve Lang, Vinny Valant and Kevin Chang, placed third, finishing in a time of 6:15.43.
The 1st Varsity was second in their heat, qualifying for the finals with a time of 6:00.38. They would eventually finish sixth in the final at 6:05.61.
In the only true lightweight event of the day, the Quakers raced their 3rd Varsity. The boat finished third in the Varsity 8 race with a time of 6:31.39.
The lightweights are in action next weekend against Cornell and Harvard on Saturday, April 4, on the Schuylkill River.
