PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Michelle Nwokedi earned her second straight Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor on Monday as announced by the league office. She also earned her third ECAC South Rookie of the Week honor on Tuesday. Nwokedi led the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team in scoring in both games of an Ivy weekend road sweep.
For the week, Nwokedi averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks.She shot 40% from the field and 83% from the free throw line for the week and added three assists.
Against second-place Yale, Nwokedi scored nine of her game-high 13 points in the second half to help the Quakers pull away for a 61-42 victory. She also pulled in eight rebounds, shot 40 percent from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The next night at Brown, the Missouri City, Texas, native was three blocks shy of a triple-double with a team-high 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. In the last four minutes alone, she held off Brown with six points and three blocks, and the Quakers earned an 83-75 victory.
This is the fourth Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor for Nwokedi, who has scored in double figures in five straight games and six of the last seven. She also garnered the award on Dec. 1, Jan. 26 and Feb. 9. In addition, the St. Agnes Academy productwas named ECAC South Co-Rookie of the Week on two occasions (Dec. 1, Feb. 9).
Nwokedi and the Quakers will play the next four games at home. The Quakers host Harvard on Friday and Dartmouth on Saturday in the team’s annual Play 4Kay game (wear pink!). The following weekend, Brown (Feb. 27) and Yale (Feb. 28) visit The Palestra. The game against Yale will also mark Senior Day for four Penn seniors.
