PHILADELPHIA - For the third time this season, freshman Michelle Nwokedi was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. Nwokedi, who also earned Co-ECAC South Rookie of the Week honors,had two double-doubles and a near triple-double to lead the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to an Ivy League weekend split at The Palestra.
For the week, Nwokedi averaged 15.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.0 blocks. She also had three assists and just one turnover in 51 minutes of play, and shot 10-of-18 (55.6%) from the field and 9-of-10 (90.0%) from the free throw line.
In 22 minutes off the bench against Cornell, Nwokedi had 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in addition to three blocks. The following night, in her first career start, the St. Agnes Academy product nearly had a triple-double with a career-high 19 points, game-high 10 rebounds, and career-best seven blocks. She is just the fourth player in school history to record seven blocks in a game.
This is the third Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor for Nwokedi. She also garnered the award on Dec. 1 and Jan. 26. In addition, the Missouri City, Texas, native was named ECAC South Co-Rookie of the Week on Dec. 1.
Coming up for Nwokedi and the Quakers is the team's only road trip of the month. The Quakers visit Yale on Friday the 13th at 7 p.m., and Brown the following night at 6 p.m. Both games can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network.
