PHILADELPHIA - For the second time this season, freshman Michelle Nwokedi earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors as announced by the league office on Monday. She was a key contributor to a 1-1 week for the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team and helped spark the Quakers to a dominating road win on Saturday.
For the week, Nwokedi averaged 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals for the Quakers. The Missouri City, Texas native nearly had two double-doubles off the bench.
On Wednesday against Big 5 rival Villanova, Nwokedi had seven points and eight rebounds in addition to a steal and assist in just 16 minutes. Then at NJIT on Saturday, she came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points and added seven rebounds and a career-high five blocks. She was 6-of-10 (60%) from the field and added a career-high three assists and two steals in leading Penn to a decisive 59-29 road win.
Nwokedi also won this honor on Dec. 1 after she came off the bench and recorded her first career double-double in a win over New Hampshire. In all, Penn has earned the Ivy Rookie of the Week award three times this season --Anna Ross received the accolade on Dec. 15.
Nwokedi and the Quakers travel through New England this weekend to take on Dartmouth on Friday at 7 p.m., and Harvard on Saturday at 6 p.m. The matchup at Harvard can be seen nationally on ESPN3.com, while the contest in Hanover will be featured on the Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN.tv).
