PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Michelle Nwokedi of the University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team was named Ivy League Co-Player of the Week on Monday. It is the Quakers’ first weekly honor this season, and it comes after a 49-48 victory over Colorado State last Tuesday.
Nwokedi, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year, poured in a career-best 25 points to lead the Quakers to their fourth-straight win and hand CSU its first loss of the season.
Nwokedi was especially clutch in the second half, as Penn rallied from a 12-point third-quarter deficit. She scored 10 of the Quakers’ final 12 points of the game, including back-to-back buckets to give the Red and Blue its first lead since the beginning of the second quarter. Nwokedi finished the night 8-of-14 from the field, while making 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.
In addition to the career best in points, Nwokedi grabbed eight rebounds, swatted four shots and dished out three assists. She is now averaging a team-high 17.4 points (2nd in the Ivy League) and 9.2 boards per game.
This is the first-ever Player of the Week nod for Nwokedi, who earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week six times last season.
The Quakers will be back in action on Saturday, welcoming Navy to The Palestra at 2 p.m.
