PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Michelle Nwokedi recorded her first career double-double last week for the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, and was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday and ECAC South Co-Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
Nwokedi came off the bench for her first collegiate double-double in Penn's decisive 74-39 win over previously unbeaten New Hampshire (3-1) on Tuesday. In 20 minutes, she led all scorers with 17 points, had a game-high 14 rebounds and a game-high three blocks. All three were also career highs. Nwokedi was 7-for-14 (50%) from the field, including 3-of-5 (60%) from three-point range and did not have a turnover.
Penn trailed 6-3 after the first four minutes when Nwokedi entered the game. Penn then went on a 39-9 run to end the half and Nwokedi nearly had a double-double in that span with 11 points and seven rebounds.
This is the first career weekly Ivy honor for Nwokedi, but the second straight for the Quakers. Last week, Sydney Stipanovich was named Ivy Player of the Week after she nearly averaged a double-double in a pair of wins.
Nwokedi, Stipanovich and the Quakers have two non-conference games this week. The Red and Blue travel to Lafayette on Tuesday and host four-time defending MEAC champion Hampton on Friday. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
