PHILADELPHIA - Following an indoor season in which 14 Quakers reached the ECAC's, two school records were set and freshman Gabrielle Piper won All-Ivy honors, the University of Pennsylvania women's track and field team opens its 2011 outdoor campaign Friday and Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., at the Wake Forest Open.
The first events begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with the hammer throw, while the running events begin at 1 p.m. with the 100-meter hurdles. The first day of competition completes after the 10,000 meter run set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's festivities begin at 9:30 a.m., with the javelin and will conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 5:30 p.m.
Penn opened their season at Wake Forest a year ago and four Quakers moved up or into the school record books and 12 members of the Red and Blue finished in the top 11 of their respective events.
In the final indoor meet of the 2011 season, sophomore Leslie Kovach was the highlight as she broke a 19-year-old school record in the 5,000 meters Kovach finished fourth in a time of 16:38.93. Previously second all-time at Penn in the event, she topped her personal-best mark by 15 seconds to set the school standard. The performance broke Chris Lundy's 1992 record by nearly 10 seconds. Lundy held the record for nearly two decades at 16:47.43.
