Pair of Lightweights Earn Academic Honors

PHILADELPHIA - Senior James Shovlin and junior Sam Shaw each garnered academic honors for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights. Shovlin earned Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area accolades, while Shaw was named Academic All-Ivy.

Shovlin was one of nine rowers in Philadelphia named Academic All-Area, which is voted on by the 28 sports information offices in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better. Shaw was one of 10 Penn athletes named to the Spring Academic All-Ivy team. To be eligible, the athlete must be a starter or key reserve on a varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average.

Shovlin and Shaw helped the Quakers back to the IRA regatta for the first time in three years. At the national championships, Shovlin held the six seat and Shaw occupied the third seat as the Red and Blue won the Petite Final and finished seventh in the nation.
