Penn Baseball Falls to Gonzaga, 4-1, in Pitcher's Duel

Fresno, Calif. - Penn had its opportunities against Gonzaga in day four competition of the 2005 Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic at Pete Beiden Stadium. The Quakers' Bill Kirk pitched five innings and recorded three strikeouts but missed opportunities on the base paths pushed the Bulldogs past the Red and Blue, 4-1.

Baserunners were left sitting in three of the first four innings as the Quakers opened the game with men on base in the first, second and fourth fames. Kirk held Gonzaga scoreless until the third inning when a pair of wild pitches allowed two scores. Jeff Culpepper drove in the Bulldogs' third run of the game with a single in the fifth and Bobby Carlson sacrificed to score their fourth and final tally. Culpepper finished the day 1-for-2 and Scott Campbell led offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, also scoring three runs.

Nate Moffie finished the day with two singles (2-for-4) and Kyle Armeny drove inPenn's lone score,bringing in freshman Jarron Smith with asacrifice fly. Smith collected his first collegiate hit in the second inning.

Josh Monroe picked up his third win of the season with a seven-inning performance, allowing five hits and striking out eight Quakers. Penn's Steven Schwartz again pitched well in relief, going three innings, allowing one run on three hits and fanning one batter.

Penn will play Dallas Baptist at 1 p.m. (PST) on Friday.
