Penn Baseball Live Blog: Quakers at Brown

PROVIDENCEGood afternoon from Murray Stadium at Brown University. Penn and Brown are slated for a doubleheader today. The Quakers are looking to rebound from an 0-4 Ivy opening weekend against Dartmouth and Harvard. The Bears are 3-1 after the opening weekend.

Top Ninth – Thomas strikes out and advances to first on a wild pitch. Vigoa swings and misses at strike three for the first hit. Tellem reaches on a single to shallow left. The shortstop, Tyler, went backwards to try and get it and came close to making the catch, but the ball bounced off his glove. Mraz singles to left and the bases are loaded. Williams strikes out for out number two. Grandieri grounds to second, with Nuzzo tossing to Tyler for the final out. Brown 18, Penn 11.

Bottom Eighth – Zrenda grounds out to short to start the inning.Tyler slices a double down the right field line. Daniels gets hit by Seymour. Colantonio singles to center to score a run. Nuzzo grounds into a fielder’s choice, scoring a run. Greskoff flies out to center to end the inning. Brown 18, Penn 11.

Top Eighth – Grandieri flies out to left for the first out of the inning. Wilcox is out and Matthew Kimball is in again. Maas triples to deep center, off the wall. He then scores on a wild pitch from Kimball. Davis strikes out looking. He then strikes out Gordon on a curveball looking to end the inning. Brown 16, Penn 11.

Bottom Seventh – Zrenda singles through the right side for a leadoff runner. Holtshouser’s pickoff throw is wild and Zrenda heads to third. Tyler gets hit by a 3-2 pitch. Daniels drops a bloop single out of Vigoa’s reach to score Zrenda. Colantonio walks to load the bases. Cole going to the bullpen again, summoning Robbie Seymour again. Hey gets Nuzzo to ground into a double play, scoring one run. Greskoff with a grounder to second, but Gable’s throw is low and Gordon can’t handle it, scoring another run and keeping the inning alive. Shapiro with a single up the middle. Papenhouse walks and the bases are loaded again. Punal grounds to second to end the inning. Brown 16, Penn 10.

Top Seventh – Gordon leads off with a double off the left field wall. Adrian Thomas strikes out for the first out. Vigoa singles up the middle to score Gordon. Matt Tellem pinch hits for Penn. He promptly deposits a home run off the light pole in left center for his first career dinger. Brown 13, Penn 10. Mraz is called out on strikes. Williams grounds out to short to end the inning.

Bottom Sixth – Tyler grounds out to Williams for out number one. Gable reels in Daniels’ grounder at second for out number two. Colantonio walks. Nuzzo singles to left, the ball just getting in front of a diving Mraz. Greskoff with his second home run of the game – this one to left to score three runs. Brown 13, Penn 7. Shapiro with a double to left center. Brennan issues an intentional walk to Pappenhouse. That will be Brennan’s last pitch as Matt Holtshouser comes in from the bullpen. Punal flies out to Mraz to end the inning.

Top Sixth – Williams grounds out to first, 1B to P. Grandieri grounds out to second for our number two. Maas reaches on an infield single. The shortstop makes a good play on the ball, but can only keep it from reaching the outfield. Davis strikes out on an inside fastball. Brown 10, Penn 7.

Bottom Fifth – Shapiro reaches on an error from Gordon at first. BoBo had trouble going to his right and picking up the grounder. Papenhouse doubles to deep center off the wall. He is thrown out at third, Thomas to Vigoa to Williams. Shapiro scores. Punal singles, blooping a basehit over Williams at third. Renda bounces into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. Brown 10, Penn 7.

Top Fifth – Thomas rips a double down the line in right to start the inning. Vigoa grounds out to third for the first out. A wild pitch advances Thomas to third. Gables wings and misses at strike three for the second out. Mraz grounds out to short to end the inning. Brown 9, Penn 7.

Bottom Fourth – Daniels grounds out to the first baseman unassisted for the first out. Vigoa with another nice play, going to his right and making a backhanded pickup. He fires on to first for the second out. Nuzzo gets on base with a single to center. Greskoff flies out to Grandieri – his high school teammate – to end the inning. Brown 9, Penn 7.

Top Fourth – A nice charging play from Punal retires Mraz on a fly out to right. Williams grounds out to second. Grandieri reaches on an error from Punal at second. He then advances to second on a wild pitch from Wilcox. Maas walks and Penn has two on. Davis singles to right to score Grandieri. Two on and two out still for Penn. Gordon gets jammed and flies out to center to end the inning. Brown 9, Penn 7.

Bottom Third – Papenhouse walks to start the inning. Punal lines out to Vigoa at short for the first out of the inning. Brennan’s pickoff attempt sails wide of first and Papenhouse advances to third. Zrenda drops a single in between a charging Mraz and a backstepping Vigoa to score a run. A very well turned double play ends the inning as Vigoa goes into the hole, turns and fires to Gable who relays to Gordon for the twin killing. Brown 9, Penn 6.

Top Third – Williams leads off by singling off the pitcher. The ball went right off Weidig’s shoe and towards third. Grandieri flies out to center for the first out of the inning. Maas reaches when he singles off the plate towards third. The ball died in the middle of the infield and Penn has two on. Davis flies out to the warning track in left for the second out. Gordon walks to load the bases. Thomas follows with a walk on four pitches to score Williams. That will be it for Weidig. Rob Wilcox comes in from the pen for the Bears. Vigoa welcomes Wilcox with a single to center. He scored two runs on the hit. Gable strikes out to end the inning. Brown 8, Penn 6.

Bottom Second – Nick Punal leads off the inning with a home run as Brown ups its lead back to three. Daniels follows with a single to right. Davis erases the runner, throwing Daniels out at second on a stolen base attempt. Colantonio walks. Coach Cole comes out and summons Patrick Brennan from the bullpen. He gets Nuo to fly out to right. Greskoff goes the opposite way for a homer to right. Didn’t sound like a homer coming off the bat, but the ball got up in the air and carried out for a two-run shot. Shapiro goes down swinging on three pitches to end the inning. Brown 8, Penn 3.

Top Second – Jeremy Maas walks to lead off the inning. Davis follows with a walk of his own. Penn has the first two runners on. Weidig fires a ball behind Gordon and both runners advance on the wild pitch. Gordon goes the other way and singles to right. That scores Maas and advances Davis to third. Adrian Thomas strikes out swinging for the first out of the inning. Vigoa doubles to right center, scoring Davis. Gordon holds at third and Penn has two on with one out. Gable comes up withan RBI groundout to short to score Davis. Mraz flies out to center to end the inning. Brown, Penn 3.

Bottom First – Daniels opens the game with a walk. Colantonio lines a double to the gap in right center and the Bears have two in scoring position with no out. Nuzzo gets jammed, but muscles a single over the shortstop, scoring two runs. He gets to second when James Mraz bobbles the ball in left. Greskoff grounds out to third, no advancement for Nuzzo. Shapiro walks and Brown has two on again. Papenhouse sends another ball over the fence, this time to left field for a three-run homer. Brown 5, Penn 0. Punal flies out to left. A popup to first ends the inning.

Top First – Mraz leads off and flies out to right for the first out. Williams with a single through the right side. The ball eluded second baseman Nuzzo and Penn has its first runner of the game. Williams is then thrown out at second on a a steal attempt. Grandieri grounds out to second to end the inning. Penn 0, Brown 0.


Top Seventh –
Gordon starts the inning by striking out, with the catcher firing to first to complete the out. Mariano strikes out looking for the second out. Davis fouls out to the catcher to end the game. Brown 9, Penn 8.

Bottom Sixth – Gable bobbles Tyler’s grounder, but keeps it in front of him and fires to first to retire the shortstop for the first out. That will do it for Cusick. John Cole is out to relieve Cusick, bringing in Robbie Seymour. He starts off with a strikeout of Daniels for the second out of the inning. Zrenda walks. Seymour gets nuzzo to ground to short and Vigoa completes the fielder’s choice.

Top Sixth – Vigoa with an infield single. He lopped one over the pitcher. Nuzzo made a play on it, but Vigoa beat it out. Steve Gable with a sacrifice bunt to third. Vigoa to second. Cellucci singles to left and Penn has runners on first and third with one out. That is all for Gormley and Matthew Kimball comes in from the bullpen. Mraz with a sac fly to center, scoring Vigoa. Brown 9, Penn 7. Williams with his second extra base hit of the day, this time a triple to right scoring Cellucci. Brown 9, Penn 8. Grandieri grounds out to second to end the inning.

Bottom Fifth – Greskoff opens the inning by flying to deep center, with Mraz reeling in the catch at the wall. Shapiro walks on four pitches. Papenhouse makes Cusick pay, sending a homer to center for his second dinger of the game. Brown 9, Penn 6. The high winds today, upwards of 20 MPH have really come into play. Punal strikes out for out number two. Colantonio flies out to Grandieri to end the frams. Brown 9, Penn 6.

Top Fifth – Tom Grandieri doubles off the wall in left center, just beyond the reach of the centerfielder. Gordon retired on a nice play by the second baseman. Nuzzo slides to his right, gets up and fires to first for the out. Grandieri to third on the play. Mariano lofts a high fly to shallow left. The third baseman makes the catch, falling backwards. Grandieri was alert and headed for home, just beating the throw. Mariano with a rare sacrifice fly to third. Brown 7, Penn 6. Davis flies out to center to end the inning.

Bottom Fourth – Shapiro singles through third to start the inning. Williams had a chance if he stayed down on the ball, but it went under his glove. Papenhouse walks on a high fastball and the Bears have two on with nobody out. Cusick bounces in a pitch and both runners advance on the wild pitch. Punal walks to load the bases. Colantonio walks to score a run, making the score Penn 5, Brown 3. Tyler fouls out to Gordon for the first put of the inning. Daniels goes yard for the second time today, this time to right center for a grand slam. Cusick hung a breaking ball there. Brown 7, Penn 5. Zrenda fans at a third strike for the punchout. And a nice curveball on a 1-2 count strikes out Nuzzo for the final out of the inning. Brown 7, Penn 5.

Top Fourth – Vigoa lines outback to the pitcher for the first out of the inning. Steve Gable takes one off the hip and he heads to first. Penn dials up a hit and run play with Cellucci at the plate, and the senior connects, sending a grounder down the right field line. Gable heads to third. Mraz grounds back to the pitcher, who turns and throws to short for an out. The relay to first is wide and Gable scores Penn’s fifth run. Williams adds a single to his total today, and Penn has runners at the corners with two out. Mraz takes off from third, trying to steal home, but Brown sniffs out the play, and after a short rundown is tagged out near home plate. Penn 5, Brown 2.

Bottom Third – Steve Daniels gets one back to lead off the inning with a home run. Ryan Zrenda grounds out to short for the first out of the inning. He then strikes out Nuzzo for out number two. Cusick induces a ground ball to short for the final out of the inning. Pen 4, Brown 2.

Top Third – Derek Vigoa strikes out swinging to start the third inning. Steve Gable drops a perfectly placed bloop in between the shortstop and centerfielder for Penn’s first hit of the game. Cellucci with a single of his own, dropping a soft liner in front of the right fielder. Two on for James Mraz. The freshman works a walk to load the bases. Dan Williams launches a bomb to left field to clear the bases and put four runs on the board for Penn. Grandieri slaps a single through the hole between short and third to keep the rally going. Gordon strikes out for the second time in the game, this time swinging. Mariano grounds what should be an inning-ending play to second, but the ball is booted and everyone is safe. Davis swings and misses at a pitch in the dirt to end the inning. Penn 4, Brown 1.

Bottom Second – Cusick starts off the second inning with a strikeout of Dan Shapiro. Cusick gets him looking on the inside corner for the punchout, his 35th of the year. Robert Papenhouse with the first hit of the game – and it is a long one. He drives a home run to center to give Brown a 1-0 lead. Nick Punal follows with a line drive single to center field. Penn called a pitchout on the second pitch to Matt Colantonio and caught Punal stealing. Jeff Cellucci’s throw to second sailed high over second, allowing Punal to reach second. Colantonio lines out to Grandieri for the second out of the inning. Cusick strikes out Graham Tyler looking to end the innin. Brown 1, Penn 0.

Top Second – William Gordon strikes out looking to start the inning, swinging at a high fastball. Mike Mariano follows by flying out to the warning track in center. Will Davis ends the inning with a pop fly to second base. Penn 0, Brown 0.

Bottom First – Paul Cusick is on the mound for Penn in game one. He has a 4-1 overall record this year. He starts off the game by hitting the leadoff batter Steve Daniels. The next hitter flies out to right. Matt Nuzzo repeats the play, flying out to Tom Grandieri. Pete Greskoff grounds into a fielder’s choice, with Daniels out at second, 6-4.

Top First – James Mraz opens the day by striking out looking on a 2-2 count from Mark Gormley. Dan Williams followed with a groundout to the pitcher. Tom Grandieri lofted a blooper to shallow right that was pulled in with a nice diving catch. Penn 0, Brown 0.
