Penn Baseball Live Blog: Quakers at Yale

NEW HAVEN – Good afternoon from Yale Field on the campus of Yale University. Two struggling squads meet today as Penn and Yale were both swept yesterday.

Top Ninth – Vigoa with a double that sails over Harry Koulos’ head in left. Koulos started in, misplaying the ball. Thomas strikes out swinging for the first out. Tellem strikes out swinging as Gruber’s submarine style is fooling the Quakers. Mraz singles right through the box and scored Vigoa. Grandieri lines a hit off the pitcher and is safe at first. Williams drops a bloop single over the second baseman and Mike Mariano can tie the game with one swing of the bat. He grounds to second and the second baseman touches second to end the game. Yale 7, Penn 4.

Megee strikes out swinging on a slider down and in. Larsson-Danforth walks. Then he goes to second on a wild pitch. Neil with a single to right. The ball gets by Grandieri in right, allowing Neil to get to third. Larsson-Danforth scores. Brenner hit by a curveball…his third hit by a pitch this game. Kolmar walks to load the bases. Miehls swings and misses at strike three and Gordon escapes the jam with just one run allowed. Yale 7, Penn 1.

Top Sixth – New pitcher for Yale as Greg Lyons comes in to relieve Megee who stays in the game as DH. Williams reaches when a grounder to Elmore eats up the second baseman. Maas pops up to third. Yale, Penn 1

Bottom Fifth – Brenner is hit by a pitch to start the inning. Kolmar walks. After a sac bunt from Miehls, Schmidt grounds out to third with no advance on the runners. Then Schropp flies out to right to end the inning. Yale 6, Penn 1.

Top Fifth – Gordon starts the inning with a hard-hit single at the second baseman. Tough play for Elmore with a bad hop and Penn has a leadoff baserunner. Vigoa lines out to right. Thomas walks and Penn has two on. Matt Tellem walks on a 3-2 pitch to bring up Mraz. The rookie leadoff hitter strikes out swinging. Grandieri flies out to center, and the Quakers fail to score with the bases loaded. Yale 6, Penn 1.

Top Fourth – Williams flies out to shallow center. Maas grounds out to short. Nice play from Larsson-Danforth on a hard grounder from Davis and he tosses to Megee for the final out of the inning. Yale 6, Penn 1.

Bottom Third – Elmore leads off with a flyout to center. Megee helps out his cause with a single that Thomas bobbles in center to allow Megee to go to second. McNulty strikes out Larsson-Danforth for the second out of the inning. Neil slams a single to center, scoring Megee. Brenner walks and Yale has two on with two out. Kolmar turns on a fastball and sends it into the shrubbery in left for a three-run homer. Miehls walks, the fourth batter in a row to reach base. Schmidt with a double to left center, scoring Miehls. Schropp flies out to right to end the inning. Yale 6, Penn 1.

Top Third – Matt Tellem flies out to center to start the frame. Mraz pops to second. Grandieri strikes out swinging as Penn goes down in order for the second straight inning. Penn 1, Yale 1.

Top Second – Gordon strikes out to start the inning. Vigoa follows suit, swinging at a pitch in the dirt. Thomas grounds out to the pitcher. Penn 1, Yale 1.

Bottom First – Chris Mcnulty strikes out Schropp looking to start the game. Elmore loops a ball to shallow right. Grandieri and Tellem collide in right and Elmore is at second with a double. Tellem is down for a while, but shakes it off and stays in the game. Megee drives a single up the middle to score Elmore and tie the game. Megee steal second on a high pitch from McNulty. Larsson-Danforth walks. Neil flies out to center, Megee advancing to third. Painful foul ball for Megee, as he his hit by a line drive from Ryan Brenner in foul territory at third. After the walk-off homer, we will have a break until game two.

Bottom Seventh – The 2, 3 and 4 hitters are due up for Yale in the bottom of the inning. Roth still on the mound, but Grandieri and Gordon have warmed up a bit in the pen in the last few innings. The first pitch is a single from Elmore. Stephen Miehls comes in to pinch run for Elmore. Roth with a wild pitch to advance Miehls. Megee grounds out to Roth. Lots of changes for Penn here. Grandieri comes in to pitch. Davis moves to right. Gordon heads to first and Steve Gable goes to second base. Larsson-Danforth sends an opposite field home run to left, scoring two and ending the game. Yale 7, Penn 6.

Top Seventh – Gordon flies out to the warning track in center for the first out. Davis follows with a single to right, his second single of the game. That is all for Josselyn as Eric Schultz comes out of the bullpen for the Bulldogs. Schultz is a righty who has a submarine-style delivery. Vigoa bunts a foul straight up to the catcher for the second out. Thomas figures out the funky delivery and singles through the left side. Cellucci with a slow grounder to short, Schmidt fields, but cant get the throw over in time and the bases are loaded. Mraz strikes out swinging to end the inning. Penn 6, Yale 5.

Bottom Sixth – One pitch, one out for Roth to start the inning, inducing a groundball to second that Gordon fields cleanly. Roth follows by just catching the outside corner for a called strike three, his seventh K of the game. Schmidt singles through the right side to bring up the leadoff hitter Schropp. Schmidt steals second on the 1-1 pitch. Schropp grounds to third, Williams bobbles the ball but regroups and fires to first, just beating the runner to the bag to end the inning. Penn 6, Yale 5.

Top Sixth – Mraz leads off with a standup double to the gap in right-center for his second hit of the day. Grandieri swings and misses at strike three, with the catcher throwing to first to lock up the out. Willimas flies out to shallow center for out number two. Maas grounds out to short on a nice running play by Schmidt to end the inning. Penn 6, Yale 5.

Bottom Fifth – Elmoire leads off with a grounder to short. A strong throw from Vigoa retires him for the first time today. Megee follows suit with a groundout to short for the second out. Larsson-Danforth lines a single in front of Grandieri in right for the first hit of the inning. Larsson-Danforth steals second, Cellucci threw high, but Larsson-Danforth would have been easily as he had a great job. Sweeney is hit by the next pitch. Roth strikes out Moore for the third time today – this time swinging to squash the potential rally. Penn 6, Yale 5.

Top Fifth – Grandieri with his second hit of the game, sending a single up the middle. FYI, the wind is blowing out to left a pretty good rate at the moment. Williams sends a high pupup to second that the second baseman has trouble handling in shallow right. Everyone is safe. Maas follows with a three-run line-drive home run over the high fence in right to give Penn the lead, 6-5. Gordon grounds out to short for the first out. Davis strikes out swinging. Vigoa picks up his second double of the game, sending a shot to the corner in left. Thomas is intentionally walked with two out to bring up Cellucci. The senior catcher flies out to right to end the inning as the strategy pays off. Penn 6, Yale 5.

Bottom Fourth – Nice play from Vigoa at short to retire Stanley to start the inning. On a slow bouncer, he charges and fires on the run. Vigoa has really settled down at short after struggling in Florida to start the season. Schmidt flies out to Thomas in center for out number two. Pretty much right at Thomas…who needed to take three steps back. Roth strikes out Schropp to end the inning. Yale 5, Penn 3.

Top Fourth – As Penn comes to bat in the fourth, the sun is shining on a beautiful, 60 degree day in New Haven. Have to also give credit to the game operations staff here in the press box. They have decided that today is “80s Day” and in between innings we are getting some of the finest 80s tunes over the sound system.

Davis starts off the inning with a seeing-eye single through the hole on the right side between the firstbaseman and secondbaseman. Derek Vigoa follows with a lined double down the line in left. Two in scoring position with no out for the Quakers. Thomas grounds to second, scoring Davis from second. Vigoa to third. The throw from second was off a bit, but when your guy at first is 6’6, you can count on him to stretch pretty far and make the play. Cellucci goes down swinging on three pitches, chasing a pitch outside. Mraz goes down looking for the second time in the game to end the inning with just one run for Penn. Yale 5, Penn 3.

Bottom Third – Roth starts out with a big strikeout of Larsson-Danforth, getting the 6’6 firstbaseman to chase a pitch outside and in the dirt. Sweeney walks on a full count. Yale tries another hit and run, but Moore fouls the pitch off. And a great pitch, fastball on the outside corner rings up Moore for Roth’s fourth K of the game. On the first pitch, Sweeney takes off and Cellucci’s throw is almost in time, but Sweenye eludes the tag for a stolen base. Kolmar sends a ball into the gap, but the ball hangs up and Thomas is able to range towards left and reel in the third out of the inning. Yale 5, Penn 2.

Top Third – Let’s see if Penn can pickup Roth here, after the hurler gave up three in the bottom of the third. Penn has had a bad habit of allowing runs immediately after scoring in the Quakers’ half of the inning.

Williams starts the inning by striking out swinging. Jeremy Maas flies out to right on an 0-2 count. On the first strike, the umpire issued a warning to the Penn bench after they questioned the call on a pitch that was close on the outside corner to the right-handed hitting Maas. Gordon gets rung up on a called strike three, another pitch that was close… Yale 5, Penn 2.

Bottom Second – Roth picks up his first strike out of the game, getting Andrew Moore to look at a pitch on the outside corner. Andrew Kolmar walks for the first On a full count, Davis Stanley draws the second walk in a row putting two on for Matt Schmidt, the nine hitter. On the first pitch Schmidt takes advantage of the hole at second on a hit-and-run and slaps a single. That scores Kolmar and advances Stanley to third. Schropp grounds out to second, scoring Stanley. Schmidt advances to second. Elmore follows with a lined double down the line in left to score Schmidt. Roth picks up another strikeout with a curveball on the outside corner to end the inning. Yale 5, Penn 2.

Top Second – William Gordon answers quickly for Penn with an opposite field home run of his own to right field for Penn’s first run of the game. Will Davis is up next and he grounds out to first for the first out of the inning. Derek Vigoa comes up and swings at the first pitch, grounding out to third on a two-hopper. Thomas comes up and works a walk. Jossely attempts a pickoff to first, but the throw is wild and Thomas advances to second. The 3-1 pitch to Jeff Cellucci is inside and he walks to turn the lineup over with Mraz coming up. He swings at the first pitch and lines a single to left, scoring Thomas from second as Penn ties the game. Grandieri looks at a third strike on the outside corner to end the inning. But, Penn does a good job answering the two runs put up by Yale and evening the score. Penn 2, Yale 2.

Bottom First – Todd Roth on the mound for Penn today, looking to serve as the stopper and end this losing streak. A lineup change for Penn as well as William Gordon moves to second and Will Davis gets the start at first.

Top First – James Mraz opens the game with a strikeout looking. Tom Grandieri, batting second, loops a ball into no man’s land in shallow left near the line. Running aggressively, Grandieri turns it into a double. Dan Williams grounds out to short for the second out of the inning, bringing up cleanup hitter Jeremy Maas. He becomes the second strikeout victim for starter Brandon Josselyn, looking at strike three on the outside corner. Penn 0, Yale 0.
