Penn Breezes Past Explorers


PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated La Salle University on Tuesday evening at Sheerr Pool. The men downed the Explorers 140-98, while the women won 137-94. Overall, the Quakers took 14 of the 26 events.

The women took the first and second in the 200 yard medley relay. Stephanie Colson, Megan Carlin, Kirsten Kelly and Laura Hotaling took the top place with a 1:51.28 finish. The men’s team of Teddy Rainaud, Jon Kaufman, Brian Gartner and Kevin Scott won with a time of 1:36.78.

Freshman Theresa Altieri (17:22.04) won the 1,650 yard freestyle for the women. On the men’s side, Devon Carr (9:52.97) finished first in the 1,000 yard freestyle. Teammates Jason McGrath (9:55.89) and Neville Mitchell (10:22.62) finished second and third.

Pat Gallagher (1:43.69) took first in the 200 yard freestyle. Jessica Aiello (25.20) won the 50 yard freestyle for the women, while John Gillette (21.56) took top place for the men. Aiello (1:01.06), also took first in the 100 yard butterfly. Senior Pat Maloney (56.62) took first on the men’s side.

Senior Kelly Tek earned 244.65 points in the 3-meter diving for the women. Senior Tyler Markman took second place in both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving.

Both men’s and women’s teams are in action again against Columbia. The women travel to New York on Friday, Dec. 2. The meet starts at 6 p.m. The men host the Lions on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m.
