Philadelphia, Pa. The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team defeated Brown, 3-2, this evening. Junior Michelle Kauffman led the Quakers with 18 kills and three total blocks.
"This was a total team effort," said Head Coach Kerry Major Carr. "Our offense was off the mark, so it was a defensive battle and the team stepped up, especially in the fifth game."
The Quakers (11-8, 4-4 Ivy League) won the first game, 30-24. Then the battle began, with the Bears (4-12, 3-3 Ivy League) taking the next game 30-21 and Penn winning the third, 30-26. The two teamstraded points back and forth, with Brown eventually coming out on top in the fourth game, 30-28. The fifth game, however, was won by the Redand Bluewith a score of 17-15 after a hard fought attack on both sides of the net.
In addition to Kauffman's 18 kills, senior Lynzy Caton had 12 kills and freshman Anna Shlimak and junior Cara Thomason each contributed 11 kills. Shilmak also had 11 digs and one block while Thomason had eight digs and one service ace. Freshman Linda Zhang had 54 assists in the victory.
Junior Lauren Gibbs led the Bears with 18 kills.
