Charlottesville- The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team lost to the University of Virginia 3-2, in the conclusion of the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament on Saturday at the University of Virginia.
"It was a great match,” said Head Coach Kerry Carr. “UVA is a really tough team, and for us to compete with them is huge. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the ACC.”
Junior Cara Thomason had 15 kills to pace the Quakers (2-1), who won the first game, 30-22. The Cavaliers (7-1), won the next game, 30-20 before the Red and Blue came back to win the third game, 30-24. It wasn’t enough, however, as UVA battled through ten tie scores and five lead changes to win the fourth game, 30-27, and took the fifth game, 15-9. Freshman Anna Shlimak had 11 kills during the match and senior Lynzy Caton had six blocks. Thomason was named to the All-Tournament Team after accumulating 46 kills and five blocks. Freshman Linda Zhang, who recorded assists and 16 kills over the weekend, was also named to the team.
UVA was led by freshman Sarah Kirkwood, who had 27 kills and a total of 28 points for the Cavaliers.
