Richmond, Va. The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team lost a tough battle to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Cary St. Field.
The Quakers (0-2) got on the board first with a Liz Lorelli tally with 25 minutes remaining in the first half. Lorelli tipped in the rebound of junior Kristen Gray’s penalty corner shot.The Rams (3-1) came back to tie the game 11 minutes into the second stanza. Carlot Verloop snuck the first of her two goals past Penn’s Elizabeth Schlossberg. Verloop tallied her second goal with 7:37 remaining in the contest to take the lead. Madiera Mustafaa added the insurance goal for the Rams with 3:10 left in the game.
Schlossberg made five saves in the cage, while Becca Leuzzi stopped two shots for Virginia Commonwealth.
The Quakers return to Franklin Field for the home-opener against Saint Joseph’s on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
