PHILADELPHIA--Freshman Elizabeth Hitti scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist to lead Penn (1-0) to a 5-2 win over Lehigh (0-3) in the season opener at Franklin Field. This is the first time since 2008 the Quakers have won their season opener.

Junior captain Julie Tahan picked up where she left off last season, tallying one goal for the Quakers. Penn also received goals from Amelia Cohen, Sunny Stirewalt and MaryRose Croddick, while sophomore goalkeeper Carly Sokach had four saves in her first career start to earn the win.

“The girls wanted to set the precedent this season of starting really strong,” said third-year head coach Colleen Fink. “I thought it showed a lot of character from this program to regain the lead, score go-ahead goal and build from there. They’re all very skilled and very capable and can rely on one another to finish the play”.

Penn controlled much of the game holding a 24-6 shot advantage, 19 of those coming in the second half, and a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.

Amelia Cohen opened up scoring with her first career goal in the 29th off an assist from Sarah Hasson to give Penn a 1-0 lead. Stirewalt tallied one in the 34thminute, assisted by Hitti from a Helene Caniglia corner to make it 2-0.

Lehigh made a run at the beginning of the second half with two unanswered goals from scoring-leader Kim Eng and Lindsay Metzger to knot it up at 2-2.

Sokach & Co. would not give up another goal as Penn went on a 3-0 run to end the game. Hitti scored on a blast from the right side for the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute. Tahan added one seven minutes later and Croddick knocked one in from right in front of the goal with 20 seconds left to ice the game for the Quakers.

Penn returns to action Sunday at Franklin Field against Towson (0-2) at 7 p.m.
