FLOURTOWN, Pa. - Led by a pair of top-10 individual finishes, the Penn men's golf team capped off its fallseason by tying for second place at the Big 5 Classic, held this weekend at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
The Quakers shot 301-303--604 (+36) on the par-71 course, tying with Georgetown for second. Columbia ran away with the team title (295-296--591, +23), while the Quakers and Hoyas were three shots ahead of fourth-place Richmond (295-312--607, +39).
Sophomore Michael Blodgett led the Penn contingent. After carding a first-round 72, he came back and shot a 76 Sunday afternoon for a two-round total of 148, just six over par. As a result, he tied for fourth overall with Richmond's John Pelet. Junior Dean Merrill also had a top-10 finish, shooting 74-75--149 to finish alone in sixth.
Junior Nick Ryder was third among Penn players, shooting 74-78--152 to tie for 17th, while senior Sean Barrett came back from a first-round 81 to recover with a 74 in Sunday's second round and tied for 32nd. Chance Pipitone carded 90-80--170 and was 72nd.
Columbia had two of its players tie for the individual crown, and on the first playoff hole Chris Arkin defeated Chris Condello for medalist honors. Both Lions players shot two-round totals of 146.
