Penn Football Receiving Votes in National Poll

PHILADELPHIA – Despite losing in the season opener, the University of Pennsylvania football team garnered national attention after nearly knocking off No. 19 Villanova in overtime on Saturday. With that effort, the Quakers received a number of votes in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 rankings released, Monday night.

Penn received 30 points in this week’s poll, which would rank the team 38th in the country. That ranks the Quakers ahead of upcoming opponent, Lafayette (10 pts.) and fourth among Ivies. Harvard (331 pts.), Yale (251 pts.) and Brown (44 pts.) received more votes. Princeton also collected four points in the poll. Penn and Princeton are the only teams receiving votes that have yet to record a win this season. Princeton dropped its game to No. 13 The Citadel, 37-24, on Saturday.

Penn is looking to reach the Top 25 for the first time since Oct. 24, 2005 when they were sloted at No. 25 by The Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today.

The Quakers dropped a thriller to the Wildcats on Saturday. Penn brought the nationally-ranked Wildcats into overtime and blocked the Villanova extra-point in the extra session, opening the door for the Quakers to win it with their next possession. The upset was not to be as Penn dropped its fifth-straight overtime game, 20-14.

This week, the Quakers head to Easton, Pa., to take on Lafayette at Fisher Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday. Sports Network's FCS College Football Poll
