Philadelphia, Pa.- Coming off a week-long break, the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team swept the University of Rhode Island, West Chester and Wilson in its first home quad meet of the season on Saturday in Hutchinson Gymnasium. The Quakers finished the day with 189.875 points, followed by Rhode Island with 181.500, West Chester with 179.125 points and Wilson 170.625.
The Quakers won three events as well as the all-around, including sweeping the top five spots on the balance beam and the uneven bars on the day. Emily Petkun placed first in the floor exercise with a score of 9.675 while teammates Lex Chalat and Laura Duros placed second and third with scores of 9.650 and 9.625, respectively. Petkun also won the all-around competition with a score of 37.725.
Penn broke away from the competition in the second rotation, when all five Quaker scores were the highest of the day on the bars.Stephanie Ortiz, in her collegiate home debut, scored a 9.675to win the event. Kara Dewhurst placed second with a 9.650, Petkun was third with a 9.575, Chalat fourth with a 9.2 and Christina Anzalone rounded out the Quaker dominance in the event by finishing fifth with a 9.175.
The Red and Bluecarried the confidence fromits bars performace into the beam where they once again swept the top five spots on the day. Duros finished first with a 9.750 while Leah Moon came in second with a 9.7.Kelly Sievert, in her first meet at Hutchinson Gymnasium, scored a 9.650 to finishthird in the event. Desirae Gaspero placed fourth with a 9.450 and Chalat finished fifth with a score of 9.450.
In the Quakers first event of the day, Laura Bouchelle finished second on the vault with a score of 9.475. Dewhurst finished fifth in the event with a score of 9.4.
The Quakers are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they compete at Temple at noon.
