Penn Has 12 Earn All-Ivy in Football

PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its All-Ivy teams for football, and Penn was honored with 12 players receiving recognition from the conference coaches.

Penn had four players earn first-team All-Ivy, two on offense and two on defense. Senior Brian Brazinski earned his first All-Ivy honor as a Quaker, gaining first-team All-Ivy at center. Running back Joe Sandberg, who was plagued by injuries throughout the season, nevertheless made enough of an impression when healthy and earned one of the two first-team All-Ivy running back spots. On the other side of the ball, senior nose guard Naheem Harris garnered first-team All-Ivy for the second year in a row, while sophomore Chris Wynn deservedly collected first-team All-Ivy at the defensive back position.

Penn’s pair of linebackers, senior Joe Anastasio and junior Jay Colabella, were both second-team All-Ivy picks by the coaches.

Six Penn players got honorable mention recognition, including two players who will return for next season -- juniors Chris Kovalcik on the offensive line, and Tyson Maugle at defensive back. The four seniors to be honored were wide receiver Braden Lepisto, fullback Nick Cisler, defensive lineman Tom Stone, and free safety Patrick Kimener.

Brian Brazinski started every game at center for the second year in a row, and led an offensive line that spent much of the season among the national leaders in fewest sacks allowed per game.

Naheem Harrisearned first-team All-Ivy for the second-straight season. This year, the senior was a focal point of offensive lines throughout the season, yet he still finished with 29 tackles -- including seven for loss -- and had two sacks.

Joe Sandberg, like Harris, received his second first-team All-Ivy honor.Hedid sodespite missing two full games, and almost all of the Quakers’ gameat Harvard (he got injured on his first carry of the game, and made just one more rush on the day). Despite that, he averaged nearly 100 yards per outing this season (98.8), and went over the century mark five times. Sandberg ended his career with 2,231 yards, good for seventh on Penn’s all-time rushing list.

Chris Wynn finished among the national and Ivy League leaders in interceptions per game this season, pulling down five picks. He also led the Quakers with 11 passes defended, and had 28 tackles.

Joe Anastasio, one of this year’s captains, had another stellar season at linebacker for the Quakers -- one year after gobbling up 102 tackles and earning first-team All-Ivy, he came back this season and led the Quakers with 71. Among those were seven tackles for loss.

His linebacker mate, Jay Colabella, earned his first All-Ivy honor after filling up the stat sheet this season. The junior had 46 tackles, which was fifth on the team; 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss; an interception and two pass breakups; as well as a forced fumble and a blocked kick.

Nick Cisler, another of this year’s captains, received honorable mention for the second-straight season. Used primarily as a blocking back for Sandberg (and freshman Michael DiMaggio when Sandberg was hurt), Cisler also finished with 20 receptions, which tied for third on the team. He had five rushes for 15 yards. Cisler was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this season.

Patrick Kimener, who joined Cisler and Anastasio as a captain, earned his first All-Ivy recognition. He finished fourth on the team with 51 tackles and had a pair of interceptions, as well as six pass breakups which was third on the squad.

Chris Kovalcik joined Brazinski on the offensive line, helping the unit finish among the national leaders in fewest sacks allowed per game. This is the junior’s first All-Ivy recognition.

Braden Lepisto received his second-straight honorable mention All-Ivy certificate after leading Penn with 50 catches for 597 yards, an 11.9 average. He also had a team-high four touchdown receptions. Lepisto finished his career with 102 catches, making him the seventh player in Penn history to reach that century mark in that category, and his 1,283 receiving yards place him eighth on the Quakers’ all-time list.

Tyson Maugle is another second-time honorable mention honoree, and he still has a year remaining. He led the Quakers with 38 solo tackles, and finished with 54 overall including four for loss and a sack. He also had two interceptions and eight pass breakups, which was second on the squad behind Wynn.

Tom Stone joined Harris on the defensive line and made it a force. He finished the season with 30 tackles (17 solo), and had 3.5 TFLs, a sack, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery.
