Penn Has Three Women Selected All-Ivy in Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League announced the selections to the 2008 All-Ivy women’s tennis team on Thursday, and Penn was represented by three women – first-team selections Yulia Rivelis and Ekaterina Kosminskaya and honorable mention selection Julia Koulbitskaya. Kosminskaya and Koulbitskaya were also selected as second-team doubles performers.

Senior Yulia Rivelis was unanimously voted first-team All-Ivy, becoming the second Penn player to be voted first-team four years in a row. The only other Quaker to receive such a distinction was Barrie Bernstein (1992-1995). She was 21-9 in singles this season, including a perfect 7-0 in Ivy League matches. In her final two Ancient Eight seasons, she did not lose a match, going 14-0 in 2007 and 2008. She ended her career with 83 singles wins – the most among her graduating class of 2008.

Kosminskaya, who was the 2007 Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year, continued her stellar play in 2008. Playing at number one singles and battling injury throughout the fall and spring, she put together a record of 16-8 in singles play. In Ivy League matches, she was 4-1, with her only loss coming to the 2008 Ivy Player of the Year in Yale’s Janet Kim. This is her second selection to the All-Ivy first team.

Senior Julia Koulbitskaya also earned her fourth appearance on the All-Ivy team with her selection as honorable mention All-Ivy. In her final season for the Red and Blue she went 18-9 in singles play, with most of her matches at the third position. She was 9-5 in the spring.

Penn’s top doubles team of Kosminskaya and Koulbitskaya also received recognition from the Ivy coaches as they were voted second-team All-Ivy. They are currently ranked 36th in the country and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships to be held in Tulsa, Okla. May 21-26. As a team, they compiled a record of 20-4 overall and 8-3 in the spring. In Ivy matches, the duo was 4-1. They won two fall tournament titles – the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. and the Cissie Leary Invitational held at Penn. This is Koulbitskaya’a third time on the All-Ivy doubles team. She previously was voted in with partners Shelah Chao (2005) and Yulia Rivelis (2006) – both were first-team selections. Kosminskaya was a first-team selection in 2007 with partner Lenka Snajdrova.
