PHILADELPHIA – It was another tough loss for the Quakers this weekend, as they lost the match 4-3 for the second time this weekend. On Friday, it was a tough loss to Central Florida, and today, the men’s tennis team fell to Maryland, 4-3.
Troubles in the doubles point were again the downfall of Penn’s team, as their top two doubles teams lost to concede the point. At No. 1 doubles, juniors Jason Pinsky and Eric Riley lost to Andrew Orban and Scott Fink, 8-4, while sophomores Jonathan Boym and Justin Fox lost in the No. 2 spot, 8-3, against David Kwon and Boris Fetbroyt. In the No. 3 spot, freshman Adam Schwartz and junior Brandon O'Gara had a win over Louis-Xavier Lavallee and Trey Taylor, 8-4.
The battle for singles went down to the last match. The first match to finish was at No. 2, where Boym made easy work of Nickolai Nielsen, winning 6-0, 6-2. Up next, in the No. 4 singles spot, Riley lost to Fink, 6-3, 6-3. Then in No. 1 singles, Pinsky beat Orban, 6-2, 7-5, to tie the match up at 2-2. freshman Schwartz gave Penn a 3-2 win, when he got a victory at the No. 5 singles spot, beating Lavallee, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 6 singles spot, senior Andy Magnes lost to Fetbroyt, 7-5, 6-3, and the teams were tied at 3-3. The last match, and the whole day, came down to the battle waging at the No. 3 singles spot, as Fox faced off against Kwon. In the first set, they two battled into a tiebreaker, which Kwon won, 7-6(5). In the second set, Kwon took over, wining 6-4, and getting the 4-3 win for the Terps.
With the loss, Penn fell to 1-2 so far this season.
Up next, the Quakers will look to bounce back on the road, as they travel to Duke on Feb. 9 for a 6 p.m. match, and N.C. State on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
