Philadelphia - Mike Mahoney was named Director of Athletic Communications at the University of Pennsylvania. His tenure will begin Sept. 1. Mahoney, a 1992 Dartmouth graduate will serve as the primary contact for women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s golf.
"I am very excited about this opportunity at Penn," said Mahoney. "I am looking forward to getting back into the Ivy League, as well as getting immersed in the Big Five and other things that make Philadelphia such a great college city. Penn is a great school with a strong athletic department and outstanding athletic programs. I look forward to getting that message out."
|Mahoney comes to Penn from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where he spent the last six years -- two as an assistant director of athletic media services, and the last four as the associate director. Among his duties with Northwestern's 19-sport department, Mahoney worked two years with the Wildcat football team including the 2000 squad that won a share of the Big Ten title and went to the Alamo Bowl. He also spent the last five years working with the NU men's basketball team -- coached by former Princeton mentor Bill Carmody -- and four years with the women's lacrosse team including this past spring when the Wildcats won the NCAA championship.|
"We're glad to welcome Mike to Penn. He has broad and extensive experience at institutions like Penn that sponsor large intercollegiate programs sustained by high caliber coaches and student-athletes," said Steve Bilsky, Director of Athletics.
Mahoney is no stranger to the Ivy League, however. Before his Northwestern stint, he spent six years at Dartmouth College where he was the assistant director of sports publicity. Mahoney completed a one-year internship in the Ivy League's conference office (in Princeton, N.J.) after graduation, before returning to his alma mater in the fall of 1993.
During his student days at Dartmouth, Mahoney worked in the sports publicity office, and he also did an internship with USA Basketball in Colorado Springs, Colo., working with both the men's and women's 1990 World Championship teams. Mahoney also was sports editor of The Dartmouth, the College's student-run newspaper.
Mahoney has won a number of writing awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and been honored for his work by media outlets such as SoccerBuzz.
