Penn Opens Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic With Loss to USF, 7-0

Box Score

Fresno, Calif. - Penn baseball opened the 2005 Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic with a 7-0 loss to the University of San Francisco on Monday. Bryan Graves led the Quakers at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance.

The Quakers (0-3) and Dons (7-6) were sailing through the Classic's opening game, with neither allowing a run through four and a half innings. Josh Appell had given up only two hits through four innings of work but a one-out scoring spurt put San Francisco on top to stay. The Dons' leader at the plate, Stefan Gartrell, went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Gartrell ripped a double during the five-hit, six-run fifth inning.

Graves put together a pair of doubles to lead Penn at the plate as the Quakers recorded four hits on the day. USF's Nick Pereira played a large part in the Red and Blue's inability to reach base, throwing eight scoreless innings for the win.

Penn comes back in its second game at the Classic with a 7 p.m. showdown with host Fresno State.
