Penn Softball Drops a Pair to Delaware

Philadelphia, Pa. - Penn softball dropped a pair to the visiting Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens on Wednesday afternoon at Warren Field, losing game one 9-7 and falling 4-0 in six innings in game two. Junior Jen Nichols sent a grand slam home run over the left field wall for the first round-tripper of her career.

After Delaware (7-8) posted a two run lead in the third inning of game one of the double-header, Penn (4-7) scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead. Casey Hare drove in the first run on a single, scoring Melissa Haffner who had reached on a walk. Kaelin Ainley drove in the next two Red and Blue runs on a single to left field, scoring Hare and Meghan Cowen who had reached on an error. Nichols' grand slam in the fifth was her only hit of the day but gave Penn a 7-2 lead heading into the sixth inning. Hare finished game one 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.

Allison Borchers answered for Delaware, sending a grand slam of her own over the left field wall, sparking a seven-run sixth for the Blue Hens. Borchers finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and six RBI.

Game two opened with Delaware posting a two-run lead in their half of the first inning. The lead stood and the Blue Hens added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning in a game shortened due to darkness. Barbara Traynor led Delaware with a 2-for-3 hitting performance in the second half of the double-dip. Penn's Christina Khosravi colleceted a pair of hits in both games for the Quakers, finishing the day 4-for-7 at the plate.

Penn heads to Georgetown, Del. for the Bash at the Beach on Friday where the Red and Blue will open with Lafayette at 10 a.m. followed by a tilt with Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m.
