Penn Student-Athlete of the Week (Week Ending Nov. 7)

The Penn Field Hockey Team

The Penn field hockey team defeated Princeton, 2-1, for the first time in 10 years on Nov. 10 to earn a share of the Ivy League Title with Harvard. Junior Cara Calahan scored two goals, including the game-winning tally with no time left on the clock to lift the Quakers to their first Ancient Eight title in 11 years. The win ended the Tigers’ 10-year reign as Ivy Champions.

The Penn defense proved why its ranked fifth in the nation - seniors Kate Murphy and Bernice Raveche, junior Kelly McFadden, sophomore goalie Elizabeth Schlossberg and freshman Melissa Black created a wall that stopped 16 of the Tigers’ 17 shots. Murphy and McFadden both had defensive saves that kept the Tigers from scoring. The Quakers’ midfield played exceptionally well against a very dominant Princeton midfield. Seniors Sara Shelley and Jess Kaylor, juniors Kristen Gray and Lea Salese and freshman Kelsey Nickles broke up Princeton passes and created scoring opportunities for the Red and Blue. Senior Liz Lorelli, junior Cara Calahan and sophomore Tracy Statter provided the offense.
