FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team defeated Brown Monday afternoon to win the ECAC Invitational. Mikhail Bekker, Jonathan Boym and Joseph Lok won their singles matches. Jason Pinsky and Lok and Bekker and Boym were victorious in the doubles to help the Quakers to the championship.
Bekker defeated Brown’s Eric Thomas in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Boym and Lok both won their first set and dropped their second but rebounded in the third.
In doubles, Pinksy and Lok defeated Phillip Charm and Dan Hanegby 8-3, as did Bekker and Boym over the Bear’s Saurabh Kohli and Thomas.
The Red and Blue put together a spectacular run to get into the finals. After defeating Columbia on Saturday Penn took on No. 1 seeded Penn State. The Quakers took the doubles matches and headed into singles with their work cut out for them. Pinsky defeated Mark Berry in the first match and Bekker followed with a victory over Malcolm Scatliffe.
However, sophomore Brandon O'Gara played the biggest match of the day for Penn. O’Gara took Penn State’s Bradley Hunter to a tiebreaker. After falling behind 5-3, the sophomore took four straight points to win the match and spring the Quakers into the final.
The Red and Blue are next in action on Oct. 20 in the ITA Regional Championships in Hanover N.H.
