Philadelphia- The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team will be playing in the University of San Diego Invitational Tournament at the Jenny Craig Center this weekend as ten members of the Red and Blue return to the Golden State. The Quakers will face Oregon State at 5 p.m. PST on Friday, Sept. 17, San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 10 a.m., Nevada at 5 p.m. that same day.
The Quakers enter the tournament with a 2-1 record. Their lone loss of the season came at the hands of the University of Virginia in the final match of the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament in Charlottesville, this past weekend. They are led by junior outside hitter Cara Thomason, who leads the nation in service aces per game with an average of 1.17, and freshman setter Linda Zhang, the recently crowned Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
San Diego, ranked 232rd in the nation, comes into the tournament with a 4-2 record. In their losses to No. 7 Hawaii and at Colorado, the Toreros pushed their opponent to five games. Both Oregon State (1-2) and Nevada (5-2) are looking to improve on their records from last season, when the Beavers finished tied for seventh in the Pac-10 and the Wolf Pack placed third in the Western Athletic Conference.
The tournament will be a homecoming for ten Quakers- Laura Black, Lynzy Caton, Rebecca Chang, Justine Davidson, Frannie Felder, Natalie Francis, Mallory Frye, Michelle Kauffman, Ashley Smith, and Thomason.
Penn returns home for the Sheraton-Penn Volleyball Invitational Sept. 25-26, where they will host Northeastern, Georgetown, Syracuse and St. Francis (Pa.).
