Charlottesville, Va- Junior Cara Thomason had 18 kills to pace the Quakers to a 3-1 victory over Duquesne in the first game of the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament at the University of Virginia.
“It was a very good growing first match,” Head Coach Kerry Carr said. “Our outside hitters worked together well."
Carr used a rotation of three outside hitters during the match. Freshman Anna Shlimak had seven kills, while sophomore Amy Starosta chipped in 11 kills along with Thomason’s 18. The Quakers (1-0) got off to a quick start, winning the first game 30-22 and the second 30-25. Duquesne (3-3) won the third game, 30-26, before Penn pulled away with the match, winning the fourth game, 30-25.
The Dukes were led by junior Diana Wuebker, who had 16 kills, while Michelle Kauffman had seven blocks for the Red and Blue.
Their next contest is Friday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m against Radford in the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament.
