Philadelphia The University of Pennsylvania kicked off its fall campaign today by hosting the eight annual Cissie Leary Memorial Tennis Tournament at the Levy Pavillion and Lotts Tennis Courts. The Quakers, along with eight other teams, are competing in the three-day event.
Penn’s highest seed in the event, senior Shelah Chao defeated Laura Seiverling of Temple, 6-4, 6-0 and Anna Varnay of Columbia, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to tomorrows play.
Fellow Quaker Sara Schiffman defeated Jennifer Myers of Cleveland State, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round of play, but lost in the second round to Preethi Mukundan of Harvard.
Arabella Maktin advanced to the round of 16 with victories over Dasha Leonyuk of Columbia, 6-3, 6-4, and Alison Hashmall of Princeton, 6-4, 6-1.
Senior Kate Williams also advanced to the round of 16 with victories over Miriam Rahali of Columbia, 6-4, 7-5 and third seed Elisa O’Riain of Harvard, 7-5, 6-2. Freshman Yulia Rivelis also advanced to tomorrows play with a victory over Sarah Galon of Cleveland State, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Julie Koulbitskaya also advanced with a victory over Kendall Murphy of Columbia, 6-4, 6-0, as did fellow freshman Janet Comenos, with victories over Sasha Abraham of Penn State, 6-3, 6-4, and Cecila Derkin of Harvard, 6-4, 6-2.
Juniors Raluca Ciochina and Caroline Stanislawski also advanced to tomorrows play. Ciochina notched victories over Jessica McKeown of Penn State, 6-0, 6-0 and Marianne Baker of Maryland, 6-3, 6-1, while Stanislawski defeated Jenny Shular of Penn State, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 to advance.
In doubles action, the tandem of Julia Koulbitskaya and Michelle Mitchell topped Hashmall and Arcario of Princeton, 8-5 to advance to the next round. The duo of Yulia Rivelis and Shelah Chao defeated Hall and Kim of Columbia, 8-3 but fell in the second round.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. and will continue throughout the day.
