PHILADELPHIA --The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team recently concluded a training camp at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, working with Penn alum -- and Olympic champion -- Brandon Slay.
"Thanks to the generous support of the Pennsylvania RTC,our student-athletes were afforded the opportunity to attend the U.S. Senior World Team Camp at the OTC,' said Alex Tirapelle, the Roger Reina Head Coach of Wrestling. "In addition to training with the top freestyle wrestlers in the country, our guys got to spend some time with an Olympic gold medalist, multiple-time national finalist, and successful wrestling coach in former Penn wrestler Brandon Slay. We're extremely fortunate to be able to provide this type of experience to our student-athletes."
Slay, the resident freeestyle coach with USA Wrestling, wlecomed a group of fellow Quakers -- including Ray Bethea, C.J. Cobb, Patrik Garren, Joe Heyob and Casey Kent to train with the national teams as they prepared for upcoming World Championship events. Included in the camp was Micah Burak, a 2013 Penn graduate who is currently ranked No. 6 in the country at 97kg.
"It was a great exeprience visiting and training in Colorado Springs," said Casey Kent. "We were able to observe how elite wrestlers train and then were able to step on the mats and work out with them as they prepare for a huge tournament. We all left the OTc in great shape and excited to begin the 2015-16 season."
Penn joined other collegiate programs with wrestlers at the training camp, including its annual rivals for the Abner's Cheesesteak Trophy in Drexel.
