Princeton Invitational Results -B Bracket
PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's tennis team took part in the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational this weekend, in Princeton, N.J. The team had a decent showing, with junior Jason Pinsky (Potomac, Md.) taking home the title in the men's 'A' bracket.
The Quakers had eight team members playing this weekend, with mixed results.
In the 'A' bracket, junior Brandon O'Gara took on Sratha Saengsuwarn from Princetonin the first round on Friday morning, and lost, 6-2, 6-3. In the first round of the consolation bracket, O'Gara played Josh Goldstein of Cornell, and lost, 6-3, 6-4. Simon Bekker also lost in the first round, to George Carpeni of Princeton, 7-5, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, after a bye in the first round, he lost (8-6) to Michael Caldwell of Yale. Adam Schwartz was another casualty of the first round, but he managed to find success in the consolation bracket. After losing to Paul Ratchford of Columbia in the first round, he went on to beat Rory Green of Yale, and then Alex Krueger-Wyman of Princeton, 5-2 ret. He then defeated Jeff Dawson of Yale (8-5), to advance to the consolation finals. There, however, he fell to Michael Caldwell of Yale, 7-5, 6-4.
In the 'B' singlesbracket, Justin Roth lost to Mark Asch of Cornell in the first round, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, Roth beat Akil Burgess of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 6-2, and then defeated Tom Santoro of Yale, (8-6), to advance to the semi-finals. He lost to Cornell's Jonathan Fife, 8-5, who went on to win the bracket. Andy Magnes had a big win in the first round, as he beat Alisair Martin of Rutgers, 6-1, 6-1. He couldn't make it out of the second round, however, and fell to Rory Heggie of Cornell, 7-5, 6-7, 7-3. Alex Vasin also did well in the first round of the 'B' bracket, as he beat Peter Kung of Cornell, 6-1, 6-3. He advanced to defeat Jonathan Chan of Columbia, 6-4, 6-2. But in the third round, he came up against Connor Dawson of Yale, and lost, 6-2, 7-6(5).
But the big story of the weekend was Pinsky's domination of all he faced in the 'A' bracket. After a first round bye, Pinsky defeated Jonathan Wong of Columbia, 6-3, 6-1. Up next, he faced off against Sratha Saengsuwarn of Princeton, and beat him 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals. There, he took onColumbia's Marty Moore, and beat him, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the finals. In the finals, Pinsky, the number one seed in the bracket, faced off against Peter Capkovic of Princeton, the number two seed in the bracket. And Pinsky came out with the victory and the tournament title, as he won 6-2, 7-5.
Up next, the men's tennis team will travel to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. this weekend, to take part in the ECAC Championships.
