Petkun, Ortiz To Compete at NCAA Gymnastics Regionals

PHILADELPHIA - Senior Emily Petkun and sophomore Stephanie Ortiz of the Penn gymnastics teamare set tocompete in the all-around at this Saturday's NCAA Northeast Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Ortiz and Petkun will be competing as individuals along with six teams in the regional. The top two teams and the top two all-around finishers not on a qualifying team will qualify for the NCAA Championships. Petkun is the fourth seed in the all-around while Ortiz is the fifth.

Petkun will be making her third appearance in the regionals, and has qualified four times. As an all-arounder, the Ardmore, Pa. native holds a career-best of 38.975 in that event. She is a four-time NCAA regional qualifi er and has been selected All-ECAC multiple times. She earned Academic All-Ivy honors twice, and has been named Penn’s most valuable gymnast the past two seasons. She currently holds multiple all-time top-fi ve scores in the all-around, balance beam, and fl oor exercise. An excellent student as well, the philosophy major is also the fi rst Penn gymnast to be a nominee for the American Award, the NCAA’s top individual award for gymnastics. Following the 2006 ECAC Championships, she was named the ECAC Academic Performer of the Year.

Ortiz, an all-around from Silver Spring, Md., is a three-event All-ECAC gymnast. As a freshman, she earned fi rst-team honors on beam and second-team on fl oor, and as a sophomore, she placed third on both the beam and in the all-around to secure a fi rst-team spot in both competitions. Earlier this season, she was named the ECAC Gymnast of the Week. She is making her NCAA Regional debut as a sophomore.

The competition will begin at 6 p.m. in Crisler Arena on the campus of the University of Michigan. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, seniors and children under 18 in the reserved lower bowl (blue) seats and $5 for general admission (yellow) seats.
