PHILADELPHIA - The six Philadelphia Division I college basketball coaches and their wives are delighted to once again host the fifth annual American Cancer Society Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer BasketBall Gala. This year’s BasketBall will take place Saturday, April 12 inthe Park Hyatt at the Bellevue (Broad & Walnut Streets). Cocktails will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m., with dinner and the program starting at 7:30 p.m.

The coaches include Penn’s Glen Miller, Fran Dunphy (Temple), “Bruiser” Flint (Drexel), John Giannini (La Salle), Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph’s) and Jay Wright (Villanova). A crowd of more than 600 guests, including Philadelphia’s corporate leaders and decision-makers, provides a powerful complement to the passion of these coaches.

Former Philadelphia Eagles player Vince Papale -- the inspiration for the Disney movie “Invincible” -- and Drexel women’s basketball player Nicole Hester will be recognized as this year’s honorees.

This extraordinary evening will include fine food, cocktails, live music by FM Band, dancing, live and silent auction items, and much more! Presented by Independence Blue Cross and Order Sons of Italy, the goal of this year’s event is to raise funds toward the fight against cancer. More than $400,000 was raised during last year’s event. Fifty percent of this year’s proceeds will support the American Cancer Society Astra Zeneca Hope Lodge, a place for cancer patients and their family members to stay during treatment.

Live Auction item highlights include: a chance to play against the six coaches and members of their coaching staffs on the floor of The Palestra; an extravagant trip to NYC Fashion Week, with round-trip limousine transportation; and tickets to 2009 NCAA Final Four games with airfare and hotel accommodations included.

The coaches have now set an ambitious goal of raising at least $1 million annually to help find a cure for cancer. Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) designed to provide critical mission outreach, while raising much-needed funds in support of the Society’s lifesaving cancer research, education, advocacy, and community-service efforts.
