PHILADELPHIA - Following a school-record performance for the University of Pennsylvania women's track and field team at the 2012 Indoor Heptagonal Championships, sophomore Gabrielle Piper was named first-team All-Ivy by the league office on Monday. Senior Catherine Okoukoni was named second-team All-Ivy.
Piper, who set the school record on two occasions at the meet, won the Heptagonal Championship in the 60-meter hurdles. On Saturday, the Marietta, Ga., native broke her own Penn standard of 8.64 by finishing the preliminaries in 8.58, only to top the new mark within 24 hours. In the finals on Sunday, the Lassiter High School product won her first Heps title with an 8.48.
Okoukoni finished as the Heps runner-up with a career-best effort in the triple jump. She was fourth overall heading into her last jump, but her personal-record performance launched her into All-Ivy territory with a jump of 12.45 meters (40 feet, 10 1/4 inches).
The top Ivy League performers in each individual event and the top team in each relay event earn selection to the All-Ivy League indoor track and field first team. The second Ivy finishers earn second-team honors.
Piper and Okoukoni are among the Penn qualifiers for the ECAC Championships, March 3-4 in Boston, Mass.
