Senior captain Tim Begley on playing Boston College:"I think a lot of us are happy with who we drew. We've seen a lot of their games; they played 'Nova twice this year. Forme personally, my brother went to Boston College and I've had to listen to him saying how good they are all year."
Sophomore Steve Danley: "It's the best feeling in the world ...It's my first time and I'm just trying to soak it all in."
Begley on going to the Tournament: "It's the one weekend in your life where you are somebody. As soon as you get off the bus there are cameras following you around, there's people wishing you luck in every restaurant you go to.I think everybody should enjoy it."
Begley on the opportunity to play one of the top teams in the country: "This is one of the things that we all dreamed about. We have a chance to knock off one of the big time schools in the tournament when the whole nation is watching. It's the one time in your life that one game you can be that guy."
Senior Eric Osmundson on playing Boston College: "I think BC is a formidable opponent who has two great players in Craig Smith and Jared Dudley to go along with a great supporting cast in Watson and Hinent. However I feel confident about our chances as we too have proven that when all of us are on our "A" game we are a very hard team to stop.I think we need to go into this game confident and expecting to play our best basketball and not just be happy to be in the tourney. I have been fortunate enough to experience the spectacle known as "March Madness" as a freshman at Utah but unfortunately lost in the first round. However this year, I believe our team has all the tools to make a statement beyond the first round! Go Quakers and see ya in Cleveland!!"
Sophomore Ibrahim Jaaber on playing in the NCAA Tournament: "Excited!!! It’s been a long wait for us because of our early clinch and it felt like we were waiting around for the rest of the world to catch up. So it’s a relief to know who were playing now. Boston College is obviously a good team, being number one for several weeks earlier in the year, but compared to the other teams who were given a number five seed I think we should match up to BC better."
Senior Eric Heil on playing in the NCAA Tournament: "I could not ask for a better experience to finish my college basketball years than to play in the NCAA tournament."
Wednesday Press Conference Quotes
Tim Begley on being the first team to qualify for the tournament:
“I think the last few weeks of the season was a lot different than any other team in the country. It was a lot nicer getting it over with early than waiting till the last game of the season. We’ve been waiting for a long time to see where we’re going...it’s a nice relief to be here.”
Ibrahim Jaaber on who does BC remind him of:
“They have a big guy at BC that reminds me of the big guy Sienna had. They pound the ball inside and he’s very athletic and our focus is on containing him and rebounding.”
Tim Begley on motivational factors:
“I think we have a lot of motivational factors especially for guys like us. We’re playing a Big East school and a lot of us would’ve dreamed of going to a Big East school but we didn’t get recruited. It’s a lot of things like that where you sit back and say I wanted to those guys at Boston College thyat we could be the 3 or 4 seed and pound the small schools in the tournament, but we don’t need too much motivation revolving around our new sneakers.”
Ibrahim Jaaber on his first tournament:
“Well the other two guys (Tim and Jan) are a lot more excited than I am even on the way over to the press room where we are right now they were exchanging a few laughs and giggling like two school girls who have never been here before. I’m just kind of sitting back and watching everything and let everything set in.”
Tim Begley on what it would mean to move on in the tournament:
“It would mean the world. The reason I came to Penn was to come to the tournament year in and year out. We’re not like most schools that we’re happy to be here. We’re here to win a game or two and we’ve got a good chance to win both games. We’re going to do everything in our power to go get this one tomorrow. We are not going to be intimidated but we realize we have to come out and play a perfect game.”
Tim Begley getting hurt in the tournament last time and getting a second chance:
“The most frustrating thing I’ve had to deal with in my whole career. There was about four minutes left and it was a one or two point game and not only did I get hurt, but I had a huge turnover on the play that pretty much might have cost us the game. I’ve thought about that way too many times and watched it on tape way too many times. For any college basketball player coming to the tournament coming to the press conference with a name tag in front of you, we don’t get to do that on a daily basis. For us this is it.”
Tim Begley on picking Penn based on the past legacy or the current coach:
“We were just honored by Street and Smith Magazine as one of the top 20 programs of all time. When we had the plaque brought into the locker room it was kind of a surprise for the guys on this team. Even some of the guys on this team don’t realize some of the rich history but Coach Dunphy does a wonderful job of making sure you take a good look at the banners up in The Palestra. There’s so much history when you walk around our gym and I think it’s probably in my opinion the best place to play a college game. If you took a stroll around the thing, you’d see all the stories and the decades of great Penn basketball. You know when you are getting recruited, I don’t think you really care about something that happened 20 or 30 years ago, you have this what have you done for me lately mentality’.”
