PHILADELPHIA - The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has announced the Division I PING All-Region Teams for the 2014-15 men's golf season, and University of Pennsylvania senior Austin Powell has been named to the Northeast Region squad.
Powell is one of six Ivy League players named to the Northeast Region squad along with Yale’s Will Davenport, Thomas Greenhalgh and Joe Willis; Columbia’s Brandon Jowers; and Harvard’s Kendrick Vinar. In all, 155 players were recognized across six regions nationwide.
Powell was in the lineup for 11 of Penn’s 12 tournaments this year, and became the first Quakers player in history to be named Ivy League Player of the Year. He was Penn’s low scorer at five tournaments, and second among Quakers players four other times. In 25 tournament rounds, he boasted a 73.9 stroke average. His low round this year was a 5-under-par 67 in the final round of the Ivy League Championships, where Penn overcame a five-shot deficit on the final day to beat Princeton by a single stroke for the Ivy title. It marked the first time in Ivy League Championships history a team won the title a year after finishing last at the event. Powell became the first player in program history to play in the lineup for two different Ivy championship teams.
Powell finished as individual medalist at two events this year, Dartmouth’s Quechee Club Invitational in the fall and George Mason’s Mission Inn Spectacular in the spring. They were the second and third tournament titles of his career, as he won the Quaker Invitational as a freshman.
